Recipe For A Hippopotamus Sandwich
~
Shel Silverstein
“A hippo sandwich is easy to
make.
All you do is simply take
One slice of bread,
One slice of cake,
Some mayonnaise
One onion ring,
One hippopotamus
One piece of string,
A dash of pepper-
That ought to do it.
And now comes the problem…
Biting into it!”

1. The students will make their own hippo sandwich by first discussing the item(s) that may need replacing. Such as string; we might substitute that with the string cheese or twizzler candy; instead of cake, use a cookie; instead of mayonnaise use melted marshmallow. After finalizing the list; the student will make and taste their mini sandwich.
ReplyDelete2. Each student will rewrite the poem by replacing the food items in the poem with other items that have the same color and/or texture. Each student will then read the poem out loud.
